A roadside bomb blast in southern Afghanistan has claimed the life of a retired US Customs officer and left three other customs workers wounded.

The attack at the Inland Customs Warehouse in the province of Kandahar killed David Hillman, a retired US Customs and Border Protection officer, on Monday.

According to a statement released by US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano in Washington, Hillman had worked for the US government for 30 years, AP reported. 

Two US-led foreign soldiers and an Afghan interpreter were also killed in the customs office blast earlier this week. Two foreign soldiers were also wounded in the same attack.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack. A spokesman for the militants has claimed that 14 foreign troops were killed during the blast.

The southern province of Kandahar has witnessed growing Taliban activities despite a surge in the number of US soldiers in the war-torn country over the past year.

As casualties have climbed in Afghanistan over the past few months, public opinion in the United States and other countries has turned against the war.

The upsurge in the number of casualties among US-led foreign forces in tandem with the heavy civilian casualties have provoked a barrage of criticism against the US by the countries which have contributed troops to the prolonged Afghan mission.
