The freezing weather in the month of December resulted in £1.4 billion of insurance claims on property and vehicles in the UK, as shown by figures. This is more than twice the sum of six hundred and fifty million pounds claimed due to the cold snap the previous year, as stated by the Association of British Insurers (ABI).This time the snap was more severe, longer and affected more of the country.
Most of the problems were caused by burst pipes with more than one hundred thousand claims totaling to six hundred and eighty million pounds, the ABI stated.
More than two hundred and fifty thousand vehicles were damaged as a result of the snow and ice on the roads, leading to five hundred and thirty million pounds of claims.
The ABI stated that there was no proof that premiums had gone up as a result of the cold weather.
Figures that got released in the last month showed that the cold weather was responsible for the contraction in the UK economy during the final three months of last year.
The Office for National Statistics said that the economy shrank by half a percent but activity would have been flat without the impact of the bad weather.
Due to the coldest December on record, more than one billion pound worth of property and vehicles got damaged as frozen water pipes burst and cars crashed on icy roads, as unveiled by insurers.
The Arctic cold not only brought the economy to a grinding halt but also caused thirty eight million of insurance claims a day, as shown by new figures that got released by trade body the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
Insurers dealt with as many as nine hundred million pounds of property claims during the month which is the highest ever caused by a cold snap.
