Pentagon details China's new military strategies

The Pentagon's forthcoming annual report on Chinese military power will reveal a growing threat from Beijing's new forms of power projection, including anti-satellite weapons and computer network attack forces.
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said yesterday that the report, scheduled for release today, shows how China "has steadily devoted increasing resources to their military."
According to defense officials familiar with the report, it also highlights new strategic missile developments, including China's five new Jin-class submarines, and states that Beijing continues to hide the true level of its military spending.

INTRODUCTION 
Despite its never having done so before in a large fashion, the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) is pursuing an overall modernization program to enable the conduct all-weather offensive and defensive operations in a modern high-technology environment. This is consistent with the general doctrinal goal to build a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) capable of waging “Local War Under High Tech Conditions.” Expansion of all-weather offensive capabilities is a relatively recent and ominous trend in the PLAAF. Apparently, this could include offensive naval strike missions for the PLAAF and greater consideration of using Airborne Forces in a strategic strike capacity.

I would like to begin by thanking the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission for this opportunity to present written_testimonies on the modernization of China’s People’s Liberation Army. In addition, I would like to note my gratitude to the Commission for supporting my research over the last year, which has allowed me to produce a much longer report for the Commission titled, “The Impact of Foreign Weapons and Technology on the Modernization of China’s People’s Liberation Army.” [1] This written_testimonies draws from that much longer report.

China has overtaken Japan as the world's second-biggest economy.

Japan's economy was worth $5.474 trillion (£3.414 trillion) at the end of 2010, figures from Tokyo have shown. China's economy was closer to $5.8 trillion in the same period.

Japan has been hit by a drop in exports and consumer demand, while China has enjoyed a manufacturing boom.

At its current rate of growth, analysts see China replacing the US as the world's top economy in about a decade.

McAfee: China-based hackers targeted big oil companies, stole sensitive data

According to a Thursday-released report by cybersecurity firm McAfee, China-based hackers conducted a “coordinated, covert and targeted” campaign of cyber-espionage against some of the leading Western energy firms, downloading sensitive data from their corporate networks.

The report notes that cyber-espionage by Chinese hackers was chiefly aimed at pilfering the computer networks of the world’s bigwig oil, energy, and petrochemical companies. The sensitive information downloaded by the hackers also included the companies’ “bid data”, which details oil discoveries around the world.

Despite the fact that law-enforcement agencies have mentioned that the hacking incidents are being investigated, the McAfee report claims that the attacks – termed as “Night Dragon” – have apparently been going on at least since late 2009. As per the company, these attacks appear to have begun in 2007; and are still continuing.

PM said manufacturing of JF-17 in Pakistan with the help of China has proven to be a great positive in the Pak-China relationship.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani extended the government’s complete support of the JF-17 Thunder aircraft program. PM said this project has proven to be a great positive in the Pak-China relationship.

“This is the project that can become a true flagship of the historic cooperation and strengthen the relationship between our two countries”. These were the words of Gilani as he addressed a gathering of Chinese and Pakistani technicians during his visitation to the JF-17 manufacturing facility at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex.

US, China closer to trade war

US lawmakers say they are pushing for a legislation that would punish China for allegedly manipulating its currency.

The draft bill, which is to be submitted on Thursday, is to address what the US senators describe as the unlawful practice of currency manipulation, according to the AP.

Both Republican and Democratic senators had informed US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner about the draft bill a month ago.

Relations between Beijing and Washington have been strained over the issues of currency and trade.
