The United States on Wednesday designated a leader of the al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network to a list of people sanctioned for involvement or support of terrorist organisations.

WASHINGTON:
Badruddin Haqqani is the son of network founder Jalaluddin Haqqani and the brother of Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin Haqqani.
The network has been blamed for some of the deadliest anti-US attacks in Afghanistan, including a suicide attack at a US base in Khost in 2009 that killed seven CIA operatives.
“As a result of the designation, all property subject to US jurisdiction in which Badruddin Haqqani has any interest is blocked and US persons are prohibited from engaging in any transactions with him,” the State Department said in a statement. “This action will help stem the flow of financial and other assistance to this dangerous individual.”
The statement said Badruddin Haqqani “is an operational commander for the Haqqani network,” which “has been at the forefront of insurgent activity in Afghanistan, responsible.”
The Haqqani network is an Al-Qaeda-allied group based in the North Waziristan tribal region.

Former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf has said that it is possible that rogue members of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the military knew of Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Abbottabad.

WASHINGTON:
“As a policy, the army and the ISI are fighting terrorism and extremism, al Qaeda and the Taliban. But rogue elements within are a possibility,” Musharraf said in an interview with ABC News Chief Law and Justice Correspondent Chris Cuomo. “As I said, at the lower level, somebody following a policy of his own and violating the policy from above is a possibility.”
Echoing a previous statement that he gave to Pakistani expatriates in Dubai, Musharraf said he was appalled that he hadn’t known of Bin Laden’s hideout and that intelligence operatives since then remained unaware.
“There is no excuse for this massive slip-up. An investigation is in order and people responsible must be punished,” he said. Musharraf said that he agreed with Pakistan’s refusal to allow the US back into Bin Laden’s compound. “No government can accept a violation of its sovereignty,” Musharraf said.
